In this extended version of our conversation with Craig "Spike" Decker and documentarian Kat Alioshin, we hear more about the history of the Spike and Mike Festival of Animation.
Spike teamed up with Mike Gribble in the 1970's to launch the Spike and Mike Festival (and its counterpart the Sick and Twisted Festival). The popular and often raucous events revolutionized how animated films are exhibited and promoted, and made household names of such artists as Andrew Stanton, Allison Snowden, Don Hertzfeldt, Joan Gratz, Craig McCracken, and Mike Judge.
Kat is a film director and producer who's helped shepherd numerous stop-motion animated classics to the big screen, including The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Corpse Bride, Coraline, and James and the Giant Peach.
Kat and Spike join S.W. Conser to talk about the resulting documentary film Animation Outlaws, and the surreal adventures that unfolded both on the screen and behind the scenes.
