The most important criminal justice race in the November election was the race for District Attorney of Los Angeles County, the nation’s largest local prosecutorial district. Black Lives Matter-Los Angeles helped defeat incumbent Jackie Lacey and elect progressive candidate George Gascón in the nonpartisan general election. Karen James speaks with Paula Minor, one of the BLM-LA lead organizers and its team leader for police accountability.
George Gascón policies include:
Death penalty: opposes, would not send people to death row
Gang enhancements: would not pursue enhancements, due to discriminatory databases
Police killings: lobbied for changes to law, and has pledged to reopen LA cases
Juvenile prosecution: would not prosecute children as adult
Incarceration: pushed for less harsh punishments, supports reduced incarceration
