Join Ani for a discussion on inclusive healthcare coverage.
Is it ethical to treat access to healthcare as another consumer good, where one's ability to pay determines the quality of care, and by extension, greatly impacts your health?
Isn't it time we have healthcare for everyone?
This Saturday, May 11th, U.S. Representatives Earl Blumenauer and Suzanne Bonamici are excited to welcome Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal for a Medicare for All Speak Out.
Rep. Jayapal introduced the Medicare for All bill in the House earlier this year, along with original bill cosponsors Reps. Bonamici and Blumenauer. The representatives will speak and answer questions. Members of the community are invited to share their health care stories and take action to continue building the support for the Medicare For All Act of 2019.
To talk about the event, Lisa Morrison will join me in the studio. Lisa works with Healthcare for All Oregon Action. She is a nationally recognized speaker on finanical barriers to kidney transplant and is the author of "Medicare from A to D: What Every Nephrologist Needs to Know", pubilshed in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology. She's worked for seventeen years as a transplant financial counselor in Portland, which has given her a unique long-term opportunity to compare benefits of Medicare with private insurance from both the provider's and consumer's point of view.
To discuss the importance of Healthcare for All, we will also be joined by Lynda Chick, who is a nurse on a mission for health equity and universal health care. She graduated from Valparaiso University in 2001 after living in Europe for seven years, where she experienced universal health care firsthand in the Netherlands and Britain.
She began her nursing career at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago as an oncology nurse. It was during that time that she began to witness the health care access disparities that exist in a system controlled by private insurance companies. After leaving Chicago, she worked as a travel nurse working in a variety of roles, including teaching, community health education and youth corrections. She also had the honor of joining a medical relief mission to Haiti in 2010.
Lynda currently works as a Nurse Case Manager at Adventist Health Tillamook Medical Center. Chick is also serving a four-year term on the board of the Nehalem Health District. She is an advisor to Sammy's Place, a non-profit creating innovative, nature-centered, supported housing options for people with disabilities.
I hope that you will be able to join us for this important conversation. Call in with your questions and comments while we are live on the air! The studio line is 503-231-8187.
