Shaking The Tree Theatre's new season begins with an original play that combines classic fairy tales with Greek drama. Plus a Writer's Read piece by Bing Bingham.

 

Dmae talks with one of the most inventive directors in Portland, Samantha Van Der Merwe, artistic director of Shaking The Tree Theatre. We'll hear about her original work devised with the cast and designers, Head. Hands. Feet:Tales of Dismembermentwhich combines three lesser-known fairy tales with an epic Greek tragedy. The show runs through Nov. 5th.

And in the last part of the show we'll hear a Writer's Read segment from Central Oregon author Bing Bingham, whose newest book is Shaped By The Land: Stories of the Rural American West as Told in the Dusty Dog Cafe will be available later this month.

Head. Hands. Feet:Tales of Dismembermentan ensemble-devised play includes as Act 1,  Bluebeard by Charles Perrault, The Red Shoes by Hans Christian Anderson, and The Handless Maiden by The Brothers Grimm. They are three unscripted fairy tales whose female protagonists are placed in the most dire and perilous situations imaginable. Act 2 features the classic Greek drama, Euripides’ Iphigenia at Aulis, adapted by Irish playwright Edna O’Brien.

The show runs through Nov. 5th, Thurs-Sat at 7:30pm, and Sun at 5pm. Plus a special Halloween show on 10/31 at 7:30pm. All shows are at the Shaking The Tree Warehouse, 823 SE Grant St., (corner of SE 9th & Grant), in Portland
