questioning the death penalty

A father and son have just been sentenced to death by a Salem Jury for killing two police officers with a bomb planted in a failed bank robbery.  This month's guests on the Recovery Zone are three people who want us to re-examine our relationship to the death penalty and to the idea that violence is an appropriate solution to social problems.

Ron Steiner resides for half the year in New Mexico and the other half in Oregon. He was formerly involved as Steering Committee member of New Mexico Coaliton to Repeal the Death Penalty which was accomplished in 2009. Currently he's chair of the Oregonians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty and a board member of Murder Victim Families for  ReconciliationGus Lamm and Aba Gayle and are also members of Murder Victim Families for Reconciliation.  Gus Lamm's wife was was murdered on a visit to her family in Nebraska, while Gus remained at their home in Tillamook. Twenty years later, Gus and his then grown daughter led a campaign to keep Nebraska from executing the convicted killer. They did not think that more violence honored their loved one. Aba Gayle lives in Silverton, Oregon.  Her nine-teen year old daughter was stabbed to death in California. Aba Gayle opposes the death penalty under any circumstances.    Hosted by Stephanie Potter.
