The recently released film “The History of Sound” staring Josh O’Connor and Paul Mescal is a love story between two musicologists in the 1920s who travel around rural Maine recording traditional folk ballads.

The leading ballad in the film is “Silver Dagger." A young woman is told by her mother to turn away an untrustworthy male suitor and avoid a life of pain and heartbreak. Joan Baez recorded a modern version of it in 1960.
