The day is Oct 12, 2022, and I had a very special Zoom meeting with a wonderful author and forager, Lisa M. Rose. Having read her new book, Urban Foraging, I had a number of questions for her but learned so much more.
Born in Flint, Michigan, Lisa knows what it’s like to live in an area where the main economy revolves around engines, oil, and contaminants in the water and soil. Growing up, her mother pursued gardening as a must for the family bounty and that’s where the love started. Lisa learned from a young age how important urban farming was to local communities, especially in areas where the average foraging capacity was stifled by the environment. Growing up she studied anthropology and developed an interest in ethnobiology.
You can learn more about her life through her biography at burdocandrose.com. For this interview, she focused on her work with Timber Press, a local publisher focused on books about horticulture and gardening. This was the perfect opportunity for Lisa to share her experience and love for the art of foraging and creating great preservation of essential food stocks throughout the year.
I loved the book and thought it was such a great concept that I’ve shared it with many in my community. They’re excited to take a look at all of the ideas in Lisa’s well-crafted guide. We should all cherish the land and abundance it offers as we learn to grow a bounty that fills our souls.
