In this encore episode from 2009, we visit two award-winning independent animation directors at their Portland studios.
Joanna Priestley is a filmmaker, teacher, producer, and festival organizer. She’s best known for her abstract animation, most notably for North of Blue, which was named Best Feature Film at the 2018 Los Angeles Animation Festival.
Joan Gratz is best known for her short films made with clay-painting, including Mona Lisa Descending a Staircase. She’s also created animated commercials for United Airlines and Coca-Cola, and worked on multiple projects for Will Vinton Studios and Laika Animation.
This conversation was originally recorded in April of 2009 at the Western Warehouse in Northwest Portland, where dozens of independent filmmakers have maintained their studios over the decades.
