Fresh out of college in 1969, Denis Kitchen started publishing underground comics from a rented office in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Fifty years later, Kitchen is recognized as one of the leading authorities on graphic novels and alternative media, and has teamed up with personalities as diverse as Stan Lee, Will Eisner, Trina Robbins, Robert Crumb, and Mike Richardson.
During a visit to Portland in support of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund and Portland State University's Comics Studies program, Denis made time to sit down with S.W. Conser in the KBOO studios to hold forth on the past, present, and future of alternative comics.
An expanded web-only version of this episode, featuring twice as many rollicking stories, is available at this link.
