Preference returns after an early-spring hiatus! We're going to talk about the book 'George,' by Alex Gino, the story of a trans girl's path to self-understanding and public expression of her gender identity. The book, meant for younger readers, is part of Oregon's younger-student reading challenge; parents and educators in a couple of school districts are finding it inappropriate for the 3rd-to-5th graders who participate in 'Battle of the Books'.
Coming up this week in Portland: Femme in Public: Alok Vaid-Menon, with Shea Diamond opening the evening.
Femme in Public: what feminine part of yourself did you have to destroy in order to survive in this world? At what point does femininity become synonymous with apology? Who hurt the people who hurt you? Alok is trying to figure it out. Join for an evening of comedy, poetry, and performance. Friday May 11, 7 pm, First Congregational Church, $12 - tickets sold ONLY IN ADVANCE.
We'll hear a clip of an interview with Alok.
We'll take a quick look at several LGBTQ issues, nationally and internationally; and touch on some upcoming local events.
Then! Molly King and Deb Kemp, co-directors of Portland Queer Documentary Film Festival, will join us on the air to discuss this year's line-up. The Festival runs from May 17 to 20.
