Elegizing Black Lives: How Poets Have Elegized Victims of Lynching and State Violence

Host Celeste Carey speaks with Gabriele Hayden about a class she is teaching for Portland Underground Graduate School called "Elegizing Black Lives," The course will look at how African American poets have elegized victims of lynching and state violence. How have they celebrated acts of resistance? Students will also explore both the literary mastery of these poets and the ways that they expose and resist histories of racial violence and mass incarceration.

Gabriele Hayden, PhD, has taught poetry at Yale University and Reed College. One of her poems was published on Tri-Met buses through Poetry in Motion, and her translations have appeared in the literary journal Free Verse. Her archival research has uncovered previously unpublished poems and translations by Langston Hughes and William Carlos Williams.
