Old Mole Variety Hour Against a backdrop that reads "KBOO Community Radio Portland Oregon
A program of views, reviews, and interviews from a socialist, feminist, anti-colonial perspective

On this week's show, hosted by Desiree Hellegers, we bring you:

  1. Genocide in Gaza: On May 2, 2025, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) concluded public hearings into what Israel’s obligations are regarding allowing United Nations agencies to work in the Palestinian territory it occupies.  Israel has cut off all aid – food, medicine and other necessities–entirely for the last two months in Gaza, accelerating the starvation of Gazans and mounting medical crises. In their Left & the Law segment, Jan Haaken and Mike Snedeker talk about the significance of this new round of ICJ hearings charging Israel with violating international humanitarian law. They take up the history of UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency) which has been blocked by Israel in their relief efforts. Jan and Mike also look at the political terrain in the US for resistance to US support of Israel and the current use of hunger strikes as a tactic on some campuses, including recently at the University of Oregon.
  2. Food and Land Sovereignty: We feature an interview produced by the Municipal Ecoresiliency Project (MERP) with Letty Dogheart of Flying Dogheart Farms on Wapato (aka Sauvie’s) Island. Letty talks about the growing network of BIPOC-, worker-owned urban farms as an alternative to industrial food production shaped by capitalism, imperialism, and settler colonialism. The segment is part of MERP’s Food Sovereignty Media Series.
  3. The Broken Earth: We revisit a 2022 review in which Frann Michel explores the award-winning speculative fiction series The Broken Earth by N. K. Jemisin, an epic fantasy of resisting oppression and reclaiming the magic of the natural world.
