Jon Nelson hosts this episode of the Old Mole, which includes the following segments:

Civilization and its Future, Part 2: Bill Resnick interviews John Bellamy Foster. They discuss the future as the world continuously warms, wreaking havoc with vast destructive storms, spiraling food prices, whole populations desperately fleeing, and more. At some point people around the world will awake and demand a total mobilization of all earth’s resources to stop capitalism’s death march. John and Bill conclude discussing what must be done, and we can do it, having all the necessary resources and technologies to succeed. Another better, sustainable and democratic world is necessary and possible. Foster teaches Sociology at the University of Oregon. He's chief editor of the journal Monthly Review. His books include The Ecological Rift, Capitalism's War On the Earth and the Ecological Revolution, Making Peace with the Planet. You can listen to part 1 of this interview at https://kboo.fm/media/115297-civilization-and-its-future.

Health Communism on an Inflamed Planet: Frann Michel discusses two recent books, Health Communism and Inflamed: Deep Medicine and the Anatomy of Injustice, which offer counterarguments to the abandonment of public health, calling for more expansive understandings of human well-being and its interconnection with all of our social and environmental conditions.

“Anti-Woke” Censorship: In honor of National Teachers’ Day on May 2, Patricia Kullberg reads excerpts from an open letter to US educational authorities by prominent Black educators, writers and activists. They call for resistance to “anti-woke” attacks on curricula, teachers, libraries and educational institutions. The letter, by Ta-Nehisi Coates, Angela Davis, Nikole Hannah-Jones, Ibram X Kendi, Gloria Steinem, Cornel West and others was published March 8, 2023 in the Guardian, entitled US Educational Authorities Must Resist ‘Anti-Woke’ Censorship.

The Meaning of May Day: Frann Michel and Hyung Nam discuss the origins of May Day in the Chicago Riot of 1886 and its enduring if transformed significance today. This segment originally aired on 4/27/2015 and can be found at https://kboo.fm/media/17026-meaning-may-day-2015.
