They are 19th century songs that were mentioned in "Little House on the Prairie", a book written by Laura Ingalls Wilder and published in the 1930s. Most of the recordings are from an album titled "Pa’s Fiddle: The Music of America" recorded at a PBS concert in 2012. Portland band Succotash contributes a fine rendition of "Oh! Susanna," written by Stephen Foster in the 1840s.
About half an hour into the show we’re heading to Alaska for logging and fishing music with ties to Oregon. The "Singing Oregon Loggers" Craig and Terry are from Mapleton on the Oregon Coast near Florence, while Oregon’s "Singing Logger" Buzz Martin was born near Stayton in Marion County. They all went to log in SE Alaska. Martin died in an accident on Chicagof Island in 1983.
