Black feminist and activist Moya Bailey coined the term “Misogynoir” in 2008 to discuss the discrimination black women face every day. This discrimination often comes in the form of stereotypes that have existed since slavery that affect all black women at every level of social and economic class. Host Keller Henry interviews Moya Bailey about how misogynoir manifests in visual and online media and how it trancends social and economic classes.
Dr. Moya Bailey is an assistant professor in the Department of Cultures, Societies, and Global Studies and the program in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Northeastern University.
Her work focuses on Black women’s use of digital media to promote social justice as acts of self-affirmation and health promotion. She is interested in how race, gender, and sexuality are represented in media and medicine
